Cary: “I’ll second that, and any time you mention energy you probably got about a thousand heads just popping up going, ‘Oh, energy, energy,’ [laugh] because that’s the big deal today. That’s energy.”

Kelly: “I’m telling you, people are struggling with it. They have a lot on their plate. They’re walking around like zombies just praying for the weekend in most cases so they can relax and recharge. We’re going to give them some practical tips today to help them with that.”

Cary: “Chad, like a lot of folks, most folks actually grew up in a conventional household. That’s fast food, Western medicine. That’s what goes on, but as a result of that, Chad witnessed firsthand the consequences of a life that’s actually disconnected from nature and it was through his family health challenges that Chad was inspired to seek out the healing nutritional support that nature provides and in his own words, he says, ‘Sometimes all it takes is one of those lightbulb moments, and a person is inspired to radically shift their behavior.’ So, his goal as a result of that remains simple and constant. He arms his audiences with the information and tools they need to make informed choices and lead a healthier life. He’s a featured speaker in health and wellness stores across the U.S.. Chad helps people gain a greater understanding of nutrition, supplementation, and how to comb through a sea of misinformation, teasing fact from fiction or what’s called marketing [laugh]. Today, Chad serves as National Educator for NutriGold where he works to fulfill his personal mission of spreading good health each day. He’s our special guest today on Forever Young. Chad, thank you for joining Kelly and myself. Nice to have you.”

Chad Kelly: “Thank you so much for having me back. It is always a pleasure.”

Kelly: “Yeah, Chad, we’re lucky. We know that you’re really busy. You’re constantly going from state to state helping people, educating them on health, and today we have a topic that seems to be affecting so many people that we’re constantly getting emails about, ‘Kelly, Cary, why as I’m aging, as life gets stressful for me, am I experiencing this lack of energy?’ And it’s a real issue for people, Chad, because they don’t have the luxury, oftentime, to give in to not feeling like they don’t have the energy to take care of children or go to work or volunteer at church or some of the things that they like to do. So, what are some of the common reasons you're seeing out there why people are struggling so much with low energy?”

Chad: “Yeah, low energy is such a major obstacle for so many people out there. It’s actually one of the most common complaints that I hear about as I travel around. I mean, people are really just struggling to get through the day. And I know that all three of us here, we travel a lot, and we all get to see all of those great airports all across America, right? [laugh] And something that all of these airports have in common is that they are loaded with coffee shops and they all have long lines of people waiting for their caffeine fix. I mean, people are desperate.”

“They’re looking for that lifeline just to help them make it through the day, right? And when it comes to low energy I think we have to look at both the physical causes as well as the mental and emotional causes. On the physical side, number one, what fuel are we putting in the tank? Our food is our fuel, right? And is it a plant-based diet that actually supplies the vitamins we need to actually feed our cells? Or are we reaching for the bagels, the pastries, the donuts that cause us to crash? I’m sure we’ll talk more about food and how that plays a key role in energy as we go along today.”

“But also on the physical side, how sedentary are we? You know, a lot of us have no choice but to spend a good portion of our day in the daily commute, sitting in traffic, maybe we’re sitting at work, and being sedentary actually makes us more fatigued. I have some good knows, though. I was actually looking at a study out of the University of Georgia. They found that sedentary people dealing with fatigue they could actually increase their energy levels by 20% just by engaging in regular, low-intensity exercise and I love this. Not hardcore exercise, just low-intensity.”

“So, take the stairs. Get up and walk around regularly. Do some stretches. You know, all of these activities really do add up. And finally, you do think about the mental side of being stressed. How much do we have on our mind? Are we way down to that long to-do list? We’ve got to simplify the clutter. We’ve got to simplify all those distractions bouncing around in our minds and bring some focus, right? But the list for why we deal with low energy, I mean, it could go on and on and on. But I think it’s safe to say if we’re dealing with low energy, we need to pause and really take a look at why. Look at it from all angles, the physical and the emotional.”

Fatigued man at airport

Cary: “I had to laugh when Kelly was talking about the number of people that phone in or write or email Forever Young asking about low energy [laugh]. Years and years ago, I had one of my first jobs was at a health food store. Even then, you know, people were coming in and that was the number one question, you know, ‘Gee, I need more energy, I need more energy,’ so it’s been going on for a very, very long time. But it does seem kind of strange, doesn’t it, that not doing anything is stressful to the body and uses up energy? [laughs] But I guess that’s the question, is it the fact that the body is kind of, well, when you’re stressed you’re working harder to maintain homeostasis. So, is that what kind of affects your energy level because you’re using up reserves that could be used for other things?”

Chad: “I think you might be onto something there, Cary. It is ironic. You’d think that if you’re sedentary you’re preserving your energy, but it’s actually quite the opposite. We humans are not built that way. We’ve got to get up, move around, get our blood pumping, and get that oxygen to our tissues, right?”

Green smoothie

Kelly: “Yeah, and support those adrenals and there’s so much. I love that you brought up food, and that example of the coffee shop was so right on because I think there’s going to be a new diet coming up called ‘CC: carbs and caffeine.’ I mean, all these new diets coming out, and I mean come on, you know, we need to fuel our body properly. And, you know, before I get to my next question, I saw on a feed today earlier this morning that someone said, ‘Oh, you know, I’m really struggling. I’m tired everyday. What should I do?’ And this guy says, ‘Well, this helps me,’ and he shows like a five hour energy bottle. And I’m just thinking that is how desperate people are that they’re willing to drink some of those or maybe energy drinks that aren’t so good for your health just to get that burst in energy when they could be turning to some really good supplements and number one turning to food. So, Chad, tell us certain foods that could potentially increase our energy levels, and then on the backend, ones that could potentially decrease that energy.”

Chad: “Definitely. You know, there's so many different diets out there. You pass by any book store, look at the cover of any magazine, there’s always going to be that new diet craze. Maybe it’s focused on high protein, something focused on high fat, something focused on fasting. You know, there’s always a new diet out there. But something that most diet plans have in common here in the west is that they’re all overly obsessed by looking at the macronutrient content of the food: the carbs, the proteins, the fats. And while this is certainly important to consider, we often forget to look at the micronutrient content in the food. The vitamins, the minerals, the antioxidants, the carotenoids, right? These are the nutrients that not only protect our cells throughout the body but actually our cells to manufacture energy. So, this is how I try to approach my diet. You know, I stop and think, ‘Okay, how much life does this food actually contain?’ Is it right in vitamins, rich in enzymes, or is it just a big bowl of empty carbs, right? Think about how you feel after a big bowl of pasta versus how you feel after drinking a green smoothie. One food brings on fatigue. The other contributes life, right?”

“So, what do we focus on? You said what foods for energy and what foods decrease energy. Well, a lot of your listeners, they may be familiar with Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Very respected expert on nutrition, celebrated author, actually wrote the popular book “Eat to Live.” Great book to check out. But Dr. Fuhrman actually created what’s called the ‘ANDI’ score. It stands for ‘Aggregate Nutrient Density Index’, and it actually shows you how much micronutrient density is in popular foods. And here’s the secret that is just so simple. It’s that the more nutrient dense the food is that you consumer, the more satisfied you're going to be. You’re consuming less empty calories, right? And you can actually go to DrFuhrman.com and download the full PDF chart of the ANDI scale. And guess what’s at the top of the list? You’ve got the top three foods all being leafy greens: kale, collards, and mustard greens. So, what I like about this is oftentimes people feel a little bit overwhelmed. They don’t know where to start. So, if you want to start small, start with the greens. Add in the greens to a smoothie daily. This is where you start transforming your diet. You think about those greens, they’re rich in chlorophyll. They’re rich in B vitamins. They’re rich in iron. So, really nutrient dense, and this is true energy, right? It’s not that coffee. It’s the nutrients that we’re looking for.”

Kelly: “Yeah, and especially when we think of green. Green means go, energy [laugh] you know? Let’s get it going. And it’s very interesting to see how many people are deficient and how those same people have a lack of energy. So, again putting the puzzle pieces together, Chad and Cary, to figure out what we can do to better motivate ourselves to not feel like we’re dragging every day because when we’re dragging every day, we become grouchy and then, you know, for some reason we’re not sleeping well, and it starts to affect every aspect of our lives when it comes to work, our family, and spending time with our loved ones. So, we’re going to talk a lot more when we come back from the break. Please go and visit our website during the break at ForeverYoungRadio.com.. Click on the Weekly Highlight Page. Learn more about our very special guest who’s giving so much valuable information today, Chad Kelly, and we’ll be right back to talk more about your health right here on Forever Young Radio.”

[Music and Commercial Break]

Cary: “Howdy, my friends, and welcome back to Forever Young. I’m Cary Nosler along with Kelly Cappasola and Chad Kelly enlightening us as to the aspects of energy and the lack thereof and the desire to have more, among other things. Talking about the energy, vitality, and good foods, especially the greens, as Chad mentioned. Now another subject, Chad, that I need some help with here because it’s kind of confusing and that’s iron. We know iron is an essential nutrient, but there also there seems to be pluses and minuses to iron. You know, women are, apparently there’s a problem for women as they go through menopause with having too much iron in the body. We know it can act as a prooxidant in certain ways, so how do I balance the fact that I need iron but at the same time it could possibly be a problem?”

Chad: “Yeah, that’s a really great question it always comes back to balance, doesn’t it? Are we making a balanced decision? Are we taking a supplement that’s balanced and safe? It always goes back to balance. And when you think about iron, oh my gosh, what a critical nutrient in the body. It’s all about oxygen, really. Without enough iron, you don’t have healthy red blood cells. And without healthy blood cells, you’re not getting enough oxygen to your tissues.

“And that’s where fatigue comes in, low energy is inevitable, you think about muscle fatigue. Then you think about the brain actually being impacted from lack of oxygen. Brittle hair, skin, and nails can actually result. And, I mean, everything can be negatively impacted by low iron, and unfortunately iron deficiency is actually said to be the most commonly reported nutritional deficiency here in the U.S., and as you mentioned, oftentimes you think about women especially during pregnancy where their blood volume greatly increases, increases their need for iron. You think about during times of menstruation. You know, sometimes they need extra iron. Or you think about people with just poor diets. Maybe they're consuming a lot of processed food that’s lacking in nutrient content.”

“I was actually looking at data put out by the Organic Consumers Association, and they actually looked at nutrient levels in food and how industrial farming has impacted nutrient levels in the soil. They actually found in just two decades a 37% drop in iron levels in twelve different vegetables, so that can be a cause as well. We’re consuming foods with less nutrient content. So, sometimes supplementation does become available. But as you mentioned, we have to be careful with the type of iron that we’re consuming. I know so many people have taken an iron supplement or maybe a prenatal with iron it, and they felt some nausea from it. Maybe they felt constipation, stomach pain, the list could go on and on. And I tell you, one reason why this is, as you mentioned iron can be very oxidative especially if it’s in a synthetic, lab-made form. Most iron supplements are coming from ferrous fumarate.”

Elemental iron

“This is not naturally occurring in food. This is made in a lab, and it does come with a lot of side effects. At NutriGold, we actually offer a product called Iron Gold. It’s a USDA organic whole food iron option, and it comes 100% from plants, not that synthetic form. It’s actually naturally occurring iron as part of the organic and sprouted whole-food blend that you see right there on the label. So, you see highly nutritious food like broccoli sprout, quinoa sprout, organic curry leaves. These are whole foods that are not only rich in iron, but they also have the important cofactors you need like B vitamins, vitamin C, that actually assist with iron absorption. So, the end result is you’re getting an iron from whole foods that’s not only bioavailable but it’s also non toxic. It’s gentle to the digestive system. It’s non-constipating.”

Cary: “So, bioavailability is the name of the game when it comes to iron, as you said, because quite often, either you’re getting the wrong forms or what you’re taking just doesn’t get absorbed in the body.”

Chad: “That is absolutely correct. They’ve actually found, there’s a lot of reasons, a lot of theories as to why iron can be so problematic in the body. One of the reasons is that oftentimes that synthetic iron is not really absorbed effectively in the small intestines, so it continues to the large intestine and actually feeds that bad, or pathogenic, bacteria. It creates that dysbiosis, that imbalance of good bacteria. And as we know, that’s the last thing more Americans need is more imbalance in the digestive system, right?”

Kelly: “[laugh] Yeah, that’s for sure. And I love that we’re talking about this because, let’s just be honest, I mean there are a lot of junky iron supplements on the market. Ones that have caused some of those unpleasant side effects and made in a lab and man created in a way, and so people stop taking it. They’re then not getting enough in their food supply that then leads to what you talked about being so deficient among all of us. So, we do need to supplement with it, but we just need to supplement correctly. And I love that NutriGold and the Iron Gold uses that whole-food blend because I think that’s what really makes a difference when it comes to being able for it to work more efficiently.”

“I’m glad we could talk about that, but I want to move and shift the focus a little bit because something near and dear to my heart, and it’s always been one of my favorite supplements, and that is B Complex because it’s also known as the happy vitamin, and I strive every day to be happy, but share more on the value of a quality B Complex versus just taking a stand alone because so often people will say, ‘Kelly, I need to take a B12. Where can I find a B12?’ And my recommendation is I like them to take a whole form, a full complex. What is your view on that, Chad?”

Chad: “I think that’s a great recommendation, Kelly. You know, a B complex, it’s a group of eight different vitamins. One of which you said, it’s the B12 that so many people are learning that they need to supplement with because they may have a deficiency. But you also think about the B1 known as Thiamin. The B2 called Riboflavin. You think about the niacin, the biotin, the folate. All of these are part of the B complex, and as you mentioned, yeah, you can certainly take these vitamins individually, but when you think about the roles that these B vitamins play in the body they tend to be synergistic with each other. They often work together.”

“For example, we’ve been talking about having low energy and eating the foods that support good energy levels, right? Well, B vitamins are actually required to unlock energy from our food. They play a part in the role of metabolism in the body. You think about B1, B2, B3, B5 and biotin all working together in this process. Now, if you’re eating a diet that’s rich in whole foods, fresh produce, lots of leafy greens like the collards, the kale that we were discussing, you may be getting enough B vitamin content in your diet. However, during periods of stress it’s often found that your body uses more B vitamins and sometimes you need to supplement with it.”

“And Kelly, you mentioned a B complex being your happy vitamin. I think that’s a really great way to describe it because B vitamins, they promote healthy brain chemistry. They actually help balance neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters like serotonin, for example, which promotes feelings of wellbeing and happiness. So, yes a B complex, great for healthy energy levels but also for emotional health, helping with stress. And I think that’s the balance that we’re all seeking. Whole nutrition that not only helps with energy but also stress at the same time. You know, here’s the unfortunate truth, and this was really shocking to me when I learned and it may be shocking to some of your listeners as well, but just like the iron that we were discussing, a lot of the B complex supplements out there available on the market, the B vitamins are often offered in synthetic forms.”

“They’re created in a lab, I mean, they’re created from industrial chemicals. We’re talking coal tar, acetone, ammonia, certainly not what you would expect in a dietary supplement that you’re taking for your health, right? So, B Complex Gold, as you mentioned, very different. You actually have whole food sources of these B vitamins like organic lemon peel, guava fruit, so in the case of folic acid, you’re not getting synthetic folic acid that a lot of people are people told to avoid, you’re actually getting whole food folate from organic lemon peel, so that’s the way nature really intended it to be consumer, right? And you’ll love this. I love that in just one capsule per day, you actually get more than 100% of the FDA daily value of each of these critical B vitamins, and you’re getting it in that whole food form.”

Kelly: “Wow, that’s big because half the time some of the ones on the market you have to take the whole bottle to get the daily value which we don’t recommend, so that is really good news. We have to run out to a break, but listeners, I want you to go to this website. It’s NutriGold.com, and go and check it out. They offer so many great supplements not only the iron gold we’re talking about or the B complex formula we’re talking about, but they have great omega 3’s, you know, Turmeric Curcumin Gold. They have a lot of other products that you can go and check out and incorporate within your family. And just for visiting NutriGold's website they offer 20% off every single day on the website, and that’s on all their products. And if you use the code ‘ForeverYoung’, you get an additional 10% off your order and free shipping. So, essentially you’re getting close to 30% off, and you’re getting free shipping on orders over 49 bucks. We have all this information on our Forever Young website . Hit that Weekly Highlight Page if you’re driving, and get this great information.”

Cary: “Howdy, my friends, we’re back with more on Forever Young. I’m Cary Nosler and Kelly Cappasola joined today by Chad Kelly, and we’re talking about nature [laugh]. We’re talking about the complex of nutrients found in things like whole food bases that NutriGold incorporates in their different supplements. But Chad, I think it would be remiss if we didn’t mention you just in passing mentioned vitamin B 12, but there’s a big movement today the vegan movement, and while it’s obviously having a great effect with people with blood sugar issues, cardiovascular issues and such, over time it has been documented that a purely vegan diet can result sometimes in a vitamin B12 deficiency and have some pretty profound effects there so.”

Chad: “That’s an excellent point, Cary. As a vegetarian myself, I make sure that I am taking B12 every day because I want to guard against deficiency. Because as you mentioned, there's no vegan food source that we know of that offers a bioactive form of B12. That’s exactly when in NutriGold’s product called B12 Gold as well as in our B Complex Gold, you actually get both bioactive forms of B12 both the methylcobalamin and the adenosylcobalamin. You think about the methyl form actually helping more with brain and nervous system development, emotional health as we’re discussing today, but then also the adenosylcobalamin, that’s the form that’s active in your mitochondria that actually help with cellular energy production. So, in a NutriGold B Complex you actually get both both bioactive forms of B12.”

Kelly: “Guess what? The holidays are upon us. We’re going through a seasonal change. The weather’s starting to cool down a little bit which many people across the states are excited about that, but you know, with the change in season approaching that tends to lead to people gaining some additional weight. I mean, it tends to start right around halloween and then thanksgiving and then christmas and then new years and then by January everybody’s like, ‘Wow, I need to get my life together,’ you know? We don’t want that to happen to people so what are ways that we can give them some tips and really give some ways to better give us some options to not be in that position like maybe they’re in that same vicious cycle year after year. Give us the skinny on that, Chad, no pun intended.”

Chad: “Yeah [laugh]. Yeah, how can we be proactive right? Well, I tell you, there’s no shortcut outside of regular exercise and a healthy, balanced, plant-based diet. That’s always where we have to start. But outside of that, nature really does offer us some really great and botanicals to also help support our efforts. NutriGold has formulated a product called Healthy Weight Loss. It’s an incredible product. It’s really unique as well because the formula is multidimensional. Life is multidimensional, right [laugh]? Healthy weight management you’ve got to think about multiple factors, and Healthy Weight Loss from NutriGold does just that. You think about ingredients that have been shown to support a healthy metabolism, healthy fat reduction, but also ingredients that help with satiety actually helping you feel satisfied so you don’t overeat. I know that’s something that a lot of people struggle with is food cravings. And then you also think about helping with managing stress, emotional health is also addressed in Healthy Weight Loss because feeling happy, feeling stable, that’s certainly key to healthy weight management as well. So, you get a really well rounded multi tiered supplement that really is a safe way to approach healthy weight management.”

Cary: “Yeah, I also like the fact, Chad, that NutriGold has put in six of those ingredients that actually have clinical data behind them and that in this day and age that’s a good thing to have rather than just a marketing campaign that promises something that the ingredients can’t possibly produce.”

Chad: “[laugh] Excellent point, Cary. Every ingredient in Healthy Weight Loss by NutriGold, it is clinically researched for its effectiveness. So, if you think about the benefits on the fat reduction side promoting a healthy metabolism, we see garcinia cambogia extract and I know a lot of your listeners have probably heard about garcinia extract, but what’s important to know is there’s a lot of brands out there of garcinia. And you want to make sure you get one that’s been clinically researched for its benefits, and in Healthy Weight Loss from NutriGold, you're actually getting garcinia extract that’s been researched in multiple human clinical trials that help burn fat and inhibit fat production. You also think about ingredients helping with satiety, promoting that feeling of satisfaction, being full, so you’re less tempted to overeat, right?”

Friends jogging

“There’s a really cool ingredient called ‘Slendesta’ and it’s a clean solvent free extract of clean, USA grown potatoes and what it contains is a specific protein called ‘PI2’ for short, and this protein works by sending a signal to the stomach and the brain to communicate that you’re full and actually helps you eat less by allowing you to feel satisfied sooner and for longer, and there’s actually twelve human clinical trials backing up just this one nutrient alone and really fast, also in this formula and it’s actually my favorite part of the formula, is it helps with stress. It has one of my favorite herbs in it: ashwagandha.”

“And when you think about that stress hormone called cortisol, research demonstrates that cortisol can actually affect the way that your body stores fat specifically in the abdominal region, right? It can also throw off your blood sugar as well. So, in Healthy Weight Loss you get a clinically researched extract of ashwagandha that’s been studied in thirteen human clinicals to help with cortisol management but also mental clarity to help with focus to support energy and endurance, and I think that we can all agree every one of these attributes is really key to a sustainable weight loss strategy. So, a pretty comprehensive formula, wouldn’t you say?”

Kelly: “Yeah, absolutely, and one of the reasons that we agreed to want to talk about it, and I’ll be honest with you this is not a category we like talking about on this show because a lot of the products on the market aren’t safe. Let’s just be honest. They're filled with stimulants and other things like that that then makes people heart race and has them feeling like they’re crashing. And I have used this product so I, you know, again tested for myself over sixty days. I felt great. I didn’t have, I don’t do any caffeine generally, I don’t drink any coffee, it’s not that I’m against it I’m just naturally caffeinated. So, like, when I do take a supplement that would contain such a stimulant, it tends to give me a little bit of issue, and I did not have any of those issues with Healthy Weight Loss by NutriGold. So, tell us more about that.”

Chad: “Yes, and I love that you’re making this point, Kelly. No stimulants in Healthy Weight Loss by NutriGold. I mean, [laugh] there’s no shortage of diet pills on the market, weight loss products that are pretty scary, you know, they promise to help with metabolism and fat burning, but it comes at a cost, right? There’s stimulants, caffeine, things like heart palpitations, nervousness, insomnia, and we Westerners, we’re often already over stimulated like we were saying earlier there’s a coffee shop on every corner. Sometimes multiple coffee shops. So, Healthy Weight Loss, you actually have not only clinical researched ingredients that are not only effective, but they’re all also safe as well.”

Cary: “And I’ll tell you, Chad, what I like about NutriGold, again, because of the quality and the integrity that you have in that company, non GMO’s - very very important. No GMO’s in any of their products and something that I really like, Kelly and I both like, and that’s third party analysis. In this day and age when unfortunately consumers get ripped off more than we should by phoney products in the natural food industry having a company like NutriGold really is a standard that is comforting to people who are putting their faith in the supplements they buy.”

Chad: “Yeah, thanks for spreading the word, Cary. It really is a buyer-beware situation [laugh], right? You really want to do your homework before you purchase a supplement. Dietary supplements can contribute to so much health in the body, but you’ve got to know what brand and what product you’re buying and the testing behind it. At NutriGold, we want our customers to be able to trust that what they see on the NutriGold label is exactly what they’re getting in the capsule and it’s that all NutriGold products and the raw materials that they’re made from, they're subject to over 140 quality tests.”

Kelly: “Absolutely, and we stand behind you guys 100%. We use your products. We appreciate it. We walk away being educated and feeling even more confident within your company, and we hope our listeners will take advantage and learn more about you. You can find the full line of NutriGold products by visiting NutriGold's website and as I mentioned, everyday they offer 20% off on their website on all the products and as a bonus if you use the code ‘ForeverYoung’, you get an additional 10% off your order when checking out and also free shipping on orders over 49 bucks. You can also find these products at fine health food stores across the country if your neighborhood health food store isn’t carrying it, please ask them to. It's a great line and it’s going to be around for a very long time. Chad, always a pleasure. Cary and I appreciate you so much, and we look forward to getting to talk to you again soon.”

Chad: “Thank you Kelly and Cary. You guys rock. Keep up the great work.”

Kelly: “Have a happy and healthy week, and we’ll catch you next time.”
